Souls by Ednah Walters Review

Souls
Grimnirs #2
Runes #3.5
Ednah Walters

Genre: New Adult Paranormal Fantasy, Mythology
Release Date: September 29, 2014
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing

ASIN: B00N9KYZ18

Goodreads Rating: 4.42
My Rating: 5.0

Book Description:

WARNING: This is CORA'S story: This book may be considered NA (new adult) because it contains some swearing, violence and sex scenes: Suitable for ages 17 and up. A Clean Version will also be available on Amazon.

Eighteen-year-old Cora Jemison knows what it’s like to date a soul reaper. There are no Friday night movies, no school dances, and no stolen kisses between classes. It totally sucks! What makes it even worse, souls pop up when she least expects it. The last one is not her fault, but it all adds up to zero quality time with her super hot, scythe-carrying boyfriend, Echo.

Since Cora was etched with special runes by an evil Immortal, she understands why souls are drawn to her. She makes the best of it by helping souls find closure while Echo escorts them to the realm of the dead. Perfect partners, until a dark soul visits Cora in the dead of the night and Echo decides her soul-helping days are over.

Cora can either listen to Echo or follow her instincts. To make matters worse, other reapers start stalking her, demanding she hand over the soul. Even her Valkyrie friends think she’s gone too far. But something sinister is coming their way, and the soul is the key to saving her town, her friends, and her relationship with Echo. Can she convince Echo to see things her way before it’s too late?

My Take On The Book:

As always, I am blown away by Ednah Walters' work :)

I'm a huge fan of the Runes books and besides my heart breaking for Eirik, Grimnirs, the first I read in the series was and is my favorite. The fact that 2 of my favorite characters of this Reaper/Valkyrie universe get their own book series spin off makes me squee.... literally.

As always it's the same universe, with ghosts and reapers and romance and lots of baddies. BUT you get more of Malina, which is always fun since you can expect her to be a psychotic biatch. But you also get to meet some really interesting characters and you get to learn more about Echo. And let’s face it, what's not to love about getting a glimpse further into the brooding Echo's past.

There are hints of Raine's growth in this book as well which I'm assuming will play a big role in the next Runes book. And you can expect plenty of heartbreak to go around but all in all I would say this is yet another success for Ms. Walters.

The Great (Pros):
  • Echo. Echo is probably one of the most complex character I have ever read about... and I love it. He loves completely and fiercely and protect those he cares about even if he won't admit to caring.

  • Dev. He's echo, but um not as brooding. He's got a lot more jokes and is just as lovable.

  • Romance. What did you expect I love to read about love and these books do it well :D

  • Baddies. There is nothing better than a good villan in abook. and this series always delivers on villians.

  • Cora. She's witty, loyal, heartfelt and strong. Definitely the kind of girl you want to befriend and a perfect leading lady.

The Not So Great (Cons):
  • The Norns. I kinda felt like they were useless in this book and their interference was not really explained. There was only 1 good thing that I could figure from the whole shebang with them.

  • Repetition. I don't like repetition, but I dislike unecessary explanations more. I can't pinpoint the exact moment but I know I read one in this story. Mercifully, it was short but it too me back to my days raging at the Southern Vamp Series by Charlain Harris. You know when she plugged drainers in every story, the same paragraph that was pointless cause they had all of a 5 minute appearance.. in one book. If they aren't in this book I don't really care much about them unless you are explaining something that happened in the past instead of an actually explanation.
5 Quills

This universe and these characters are fast becoming my favorite in this genre ad that's a hard feat. I loved each character, their growth and back stories. Its a definite recommendation to readers of Young Adults and Paranormal books. And really anyone that enjoys books with mythology/folklore.

Seeress Release Event Teaser, Review & Excerpt + #Giveaway

Seeress
Runes Series
Book #3
Ednah Walters

Genre: YA Paranormal Fantasy
Release Date: April 28th 2014
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing

ISBN: 978-1311363312
ASIN: B00JZ1D4QC

Pages: 296
Goodreads Rating:  4.61
My Rating: 5.0

Book Description:

I love Torin St. James...
I need his strength…
But someone from his past wants me dead.

Raine Cooper is certain of two things: her love for Torin St. James and her destiny to be a powerful seeress. But when she starts having premonitions, they are unclear and disturbing. Worse, they involve Torin. With her mother gone, her father dying, and her best friend in Hel, she is not sure who to talk to.

But when the visions become more personal and she foresees her future with Torin threatened by someone from his past, Raine becomes desperate for answers. Just her luck two new students arrive at her school and they seem to have answers. When with them, her powers are enhanced and her visions become clear. There is only one problem: Torin forbids Raine to see the two girls.

Can their love survive without trust?

My Take On The Book:

How do you start a review on a book you wish you’d never finished and want to re-read again and again…. Oh that’s right, I just did it lol ;). So lets skip the formalities and get right into the ‘why’ of my rating.

The Great (Pros):

  • Witches. I love witches lol. So its no surprise that I was pretty stocked when one of my favorite series introduced them. Sure there has been mention of them and tons of magic since book 1 but not the actual she-bang so it was a nice refresher.

  • Torin & Raine. Pffttt like I could write a pros and cons list and not include this swoon worthy couple. ;)

  • The Guys. We get a nice healthy dose of all the men we love. Although I could have done with a bit more of Echo and Andris snark.

  • Cora. This girl is just awesome so I loved that she was included in this story but if I’m honest with myself she’s not to prominent in this story. But her last line in this book totally had me reaching for my copies of book 1, 2 and 2.5 so I could re-read the epicness!

  • New Characters. I like when you get to meet new character in a series. It gives the already awesome characters the ability to grow and interact, so we get to see them in different situations. But I love it more we you become invested in those characters as much as the leads.

  • Character Growth. This book really focuses of Raine… way more as a singular person than part of a couple. You really get to see her grow up and I loved that. She’s not the only one with character growth but her evolution is the most prominent.

  • Eririk. I’ve grown to love his character immensely since book 2 and I was so happy to have a dose of Eririk in this one as well… tho, he’s not in this nearly enough.

  • Honestly…. I loved everything <3

The Not So Great (Cons):

Umm that the story ended? There was no love triangle in this one… thank god. And the only problem I had with this book was that I finished reading it and I have to wait for the next release. But I guess I have to be a good little fan and wait patiently for the next installment. Oh and Eririk needs his happily ever after already! K thanks ;)

5 Quills

If I had to pick a book in this series that I felt was the best then this would definitely take the top slot. It’s epic in all its epicness.

Excerpt from Seeress

In-between classes, I cocked my ear to catch the song again. No such luck.

Lunch time, Torin was waiting outside my class, a group of girls hanging on his every word. One reached up and brushed his shirt. That was crossing the line. I stake my claim when I reached his side, sliding my hand into his. They took off. “Groupies?”

He laughed. “No.”

“Next time Leanna Finch strokes your chest, I’ll break her fingers.”

“Who’s Leanna?”

I forgave him for not noticing. Girls were always pushing boundaries like damn predator checking for weaknesses. Someone needed to tell them Torin and I was tight. Fortified like Fort Knox. “Have you seen Ingrid?”

“No.” He stroked my cheek with his knuckles. “Are we eating here or at home? I can make us something.”

I wanted to stay there and let him stroke me. His touch was intoxicating. But first things first. “Okay, but I need to ask Ingrid something first.”

He went still. “About?”

“Something.” I reached up and kissed him. “Go. I’m right behind you.”

He didn’t look happy leaving me behind, which was sweet.

“I won’t take long,” I added.

He nodded. With a fingertip brush across my cheek, he disappeared into the men’s room to find a portal. I shook my head. Sometimes he could be so possessive. He hadn’t had a relationship in centuries and was learning to adjust to ours, which hadn’t exactly been smooth. What mattered was we loved it each other, knew it and cherished out time together. Whatever bumps laid ahead, and I was sure the Norns weren’t done with us, I was determined to never let them destroy what we had.

I turned the corner and saw Cora at the cafeteria entrance. Her lunch schedule depended on whether or not Echo was around. She waved.

“Please tell me you’re eating here. Please. Echo will be gone most of today and evening,” Cora explained. “There was a fire at some nursing home in Seattle.”

“I’m heading home, but you can join us. Torin already left to make something.”

She sighed melodramatically and looked around the cafeteria. “I don’t want to be a third wheel.”

“You won’t be.”

“Nah. Go enjoy your man.” She waved and I turned to see three girls from the swim team, Kicker, Sonya and Tess. “I’ll join the girls and catch up on the latest gossip. See you tonight.”

“You want to come and watch The Originals online? I missed last two episodes.”
Her eyes widened. “Ohmigod, the poor, damaged, just-needs-to-be-loved Klaus. I have to get my Klaus fix every week. I’ve even gotten Echo to tolerate him. Okay, I’ll watch with you, so we can hate on some witches. I also want your opinion on something.”

“Okay.” Ingrid, her cheerleader friends, and their jock boyfriends walked in.

Cora beamed at me and gave me a quick hug. “You’re the best.”

Everyone at Ingrid’s looked up questioningly when I stopped by their table. “What?”

“Where’s Torin?” a girl asked.

“Around. You know I can actually breathe without him. Ingrid.” I indicated outside with a nod and took off.

“What’s going on?” she asked, sounding a bit worried.

“I want to pick your brain.” Some of the students were hanging out on the deck. Others threw football in the grassy area along the building. It was still cold, but the sun was up and diehards were already wearing shorts. I found an area away from the others and faced her.

“You are beginning to worry me,” Ingrid said. “If this is about Andris—”

“No, this is about me. Do you remember I told you last night that I heard the woman sing during my vision?”

She nodded. “Varðlokur.”

“Varo-what?”

“The warding or spirit-summoning song. We sing it before the Seeress goes into a trance. What about it?”

“I thought I heard it this morning.”

Her frown deepened. “Where?”

“Here at school. What does that mean?” I saw a movement from the corner of my eyes and turned to look. It was Blaine. He waved.

“I don’t know. I guess whoever sang the song last night is a student here.”

“But the Seeress was older. At least, she sounded older.”

“Uh, that’s because the Seeress never does the singing. Someone else does. You sure it wasn’t the same voice?”

I nodded. Someone working with a Seeress was here at my school. “Is Blaine waiting for you?” He was talking to friends but he kept looking in our direction.

Ingrid waved to him. “No. Do you want me to point her out when I recognize her?”

“You can do that?”

She shrugged. “Oh, yes. It’s like, uh, having a witch radar. Why do you think Maliina hated you from the moment she saw you?”

“Uh, because Andris was being a total douche?”

She laughed. “That came second. My sister was a powerful Seidr witch, but in you, she saw something else. Something she’d never seen before and she was jealous. Maliina always wanted to be important and, uh, revered. Back at home, they did, but it wasn’t enough. Then she met Andris and he turned her. But he took her away from home and her adoring fans. She stopped being important and she didn’t like it. That’s why she joined the Norns. She was very ambitious.”

It didn’t excuse what she’d done, but it made sense. “So what did she see in me?”

Ingrid shrugged. “A more powerful witch, I guess. I’m not as strong as Maliina, but I should be able to spot the witch here at school. I’ll let you know when I do.”

“Thanks.” I really liked this new Ingrid. She stopped by the group with Blaine, said something to him and disappeared inside the building. Blaine followed her. I went to the nearest restroom and headed home to Torin.

DINNER WITH THE PARENTS

Grinning, he lifted me off the chair, took my place and dropped a kiss on my bare neck. “You know I’m not going to focus on anything your parents say because I’ll be busy imagining taking this,” he pushed the strap off my shoulder and planted a kiss, “off.”

“Sure you will.” I put the lip gloss down and turned to look into his eyes. “Let’s go and choose what you’re going to wear. It is after five already you know.”

“The dinner is at seven. You just want me to take my shirt off, don’t you?”

“That too.”

He laughed and stood, effortlessly carrying me, then he walked through the portal and into his outrageously large bedroom, where he deposited me unceremoniously on his bed.

“What do we start with?”

“The shirt. And no hyper speed,” I added.

He laughed. “So basically I’m stripping for you, Cora-mio?”

“If that’s what you want to call it.”

His grin turned naughty and what followed was the best modeling session I’d ever seen a guy pull. That soon turned into a make out session. I wasn’t ready to leave when Mom’s voice reached me through the still open portal.

I planted a quick kiss on Echo’s lips and scrambled off the bed, my hand going to my hair. I caught my reflection in his closet mirror and groaned. My hair was mussed, my dress wrinkled, and my makeup— “Yikes.”

“You’re perfect,” he said, leaning back against the pillows, a smug smile curling his lips.
Making a face, I finger combed my hair and ran to my bedroom. I could feel him watching me. He’d moved the portal so we could see my bedroom door from his bed.

“You’re not wearing that,” I protested when I opened my door and took one look at Mom. I hated her in yellow. It made her skin sallow and the design made her look boxy.

Mom laughed and planted a hand on her hip. “I happen to like this dress.”

“I think she looks rather fetching in it,” Echo said from behind me.

“Come on, Mom. I’ll choose something for you. Then I’ll fix your hair and make-up,” I added. I stuck out my tongue at Echo before closing the door. I was surprised he didn’t walk through it. On the other hand, he had to drive from Torin’s, where he planned to borrow a car.

“You do know I used to dress myself before you were born. Then you turned five and discovered make-up and mirror, and hair products, and I knew I was in for a rough ride.”

“Hey, I haven’t been a difficult daughter,” I protested.

She hugged me. “No, sweetheart. But your dad and I had gray hair early for a reason.”

Twenty minutes later, I stood beside Mom and Dad, and watched Echo step out of an SUV. Andris’ was dark green. This one was black. Even the windows were tinted.

Echo looked amazing in his black casual pants, long sleeved light-gray t-shirt, and dark gray blazer. His chin was shaven. The gloves, chains, and rings were gone. The surprises were Mom’s favorite flowers—the stargazer lilies, clutched in his hand, and a bottle of Dad’s special drink—Glenfiddich scotch, produced where my grandparents grew up in Scotland.

“Mom, this is Echo Mairid,” I said. “Echo, my parents.”

One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. My Take On The Book:

Admission time, I haven’t read book 1 or 2, but I literally jumped at the opportunity to read this one. I’ve been wanting to read this series for a while now so I couldn’t say no.

It was a solid story, and even though I hadn’t read the first 2 books, it was surprisingly easy to follow. The whole concept was mind blowingly awesome. Sure the back story I was missing drove me a little crazy but that was my own fault lol.

The Great (Pros):

Um just about everything in this story is done like a pro. The cover art it just so hypnotically beautiful. I mean look at! It’s this beautifully innocent looking blonde girl and she just sits there looking so sad. The colors and design are great. It’s one of the reasons I was so drawn to this series.  What else did I like? That characters, their development, the romance, the action, it was all way up there with the exception of one or two tiny little things. One of them literally made my stomach churn with dread. Read on to learn what those 2 cons are.

The Not So Great (Cons):

  • Eirik. Poor Dude! From what I gather, he never seems to catch a break and that sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I love Cora, Echo (swoon), Rainie and Torin. But this guy is the first person you read as in this book and then well, as you can tell by the book blurb, gets his heart stabbed with a rusty spoon. It’s so heartbreaking for a character that I genuinely liked… or as much as I can like having read only this book. Echo was a great love interest. He literally had me fangirling it, but to be honest, I was partially hoping that he was just another Bill Compton (Southern Vamp Series/True Blood) and worthless of my admiration. I’m pretty sure I’m over-reacting but I can’t help myself.

  • Sex Scenes. Now, I’m totally down with the get down, but I felt really awkward and a tad uncomfortable reading about teenagers doing the deed. Sure I now teens, get it on, I was teen not long ago lol but I felt dirty reading about it. I had to imagine them as 20 somethings to adjust. It wasn’t super graphic or anything like that, but it was descriptive enough to kind of send me reeling.

4.5 Quills

Would I recommend this book? Yep, most definitely. But be smart and read the first 2 books lol. This book has it all, the paranormal, the romance, heartbreak, mythology, gods, magic, action, blood and lots of sizzle and steam.

Excerpt From Grimnirs
by Ednah Walters

“You, doll-face. Why are you having a shitty day?”

I glared ahead. “Because you are screwing with my head. How come you keep saying things I don’t remember?”

“I told you. The Norns put a whammy on you.”

“Norns?”

“Deities of destiny. Mean, bitter hags. They control the destiny of all beings—Mortals, Immortals, even the gods. Interestingly, I just found out why they targeted you and erased your memories.”

“Why?” Not that I believed his rambling.

“Say please.”

I was tempted to ignore him, but something weird had happened to me and I wanted answers. I eased the car into a parking spot across from my school, switched off the engine, and turned to look at Echo. He was dressed in all leather again today. I realized that what I’d assumed was a leather shirt was actually a vest of some kind. Once again, he wore fingerless gloves and silver Gothic rings with weird markings.

“Please,” I said through clenched teeth.

He touched his lips. “I want a kiss, too.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Why are you such a tool all the time? You think this is fun for me? Not remembering things? Waking up one morning and seeing souls? Ending up in a psych ward, where they pumped me full of drugs, then coming home only to be met by you, a reaper?”

“Grimnir,” he corrected then frowned. “Are those the fake memories the Norns gave you? Psych ward? That’s just wrong.”

“I was in a psych ward,” I snapped.

He raised his hands. “Okay. No need to be snippy.”

“I’m not—”

He covered my mouth then smirked when I bit his hand. I bore down until I tasted blood. He didn’t even wince. His grin broadened instead.

“Drink my blood, doll-face. Bond with me for eternity.”

The thought was scary. I pushed his hand away and wiped my mouth. “Ew. Can your blood do that?”

He laughed.

“Will you be serious for even a second?” I asked.

“Don’t you want to be mine forever?”

“Ew, no.” I made a face. “I don’t even like you.”
