Book Description:

Can fighting for the right side be the wrong thing to do?

Draven, the tyrant ruler of Elyndia for the last one thousand years, searches for the one who can fulfill his prophecy.

The Paladins, an elite band of warriors sworn to protect their way of life at all cost, search for the one with the ability to bring their world crumbling down.

An innocent girl, tormented by demons only she can see, lives on the brink of insanity and longs for a life of peace.

When seventeen-year-old Jade Rosenberg reads from an antique book, she has no idea she just read an incantation awaking her inherited power. But when opposing—and equally terrifying—groups invade her home, she learns she is descended from an enchanted realm and a member of a powerful race thought to have been hunted to extinction.

Ripped from her world, Jade is forced to seek refuge from those who want her dead. She is given one of two options and the time has come for her to make a choice: assassinate their sworn enemy…

Or sacrifice her soul.

My Take On The Book:

An interesting tale woven with mystery, magic and romance. This was a difficult book for me to review for multiple reasons.

It had a strong intro which kept me reading but there was something story wise that threw me off.

The Great (Pros):

  • Characters. I really enjoyed the characters in this book. While there is some otherworldly stuff going on the reactions and actions of each character are completely believable.

  • Storyline. The storyline of this book is initially what drew me in and made me want to read this title. It a unique one taking place in multiple dimensions.

  • Magic. I’m a sucker for books with magic in it, especially ones that I feel are done right. What I mean by done right is simple, the magic in that book has to mesh with the story and basically become the glue that holds everything together.

  • Romance. What kind of reviewer would I be to you guys if I didn’t mention the romance in the book. This one is sure to give you a case of the giggles and make you giddy with anticipation. Also the progression is pretty realistic. You don’t have 2 characters that know nothing about one another falling into insta-love. There is some major developments and a decent time frame.

  • Family. I loved how family was woven into this tale.

  • Ending. The ending was spot on and something I enjoyed immensely. It’s like that last bite of chocolate that will literally leave you craving more.

  • Beginning. I like how the intro sets the stage for this mystical book. It gives you just enough without giving you too much.

The Not So Great (Cons):

  • Inconsistencies. There are some elements in this book that contradict one another and while I would love to discuss them in depth with you all, I can’t as it would give away some major plot points.

  • Story Composition. The flow of the story seemed to drag along with some other points that I couldn’t quite pin downs. It the way its put together that gets you.

  • Predictability.  There is a lot and I do mean a lot of predictability in this book awhile I’m ok with some predictability I don’t like knowing how the story is going to turn out before I get to the end. It takes away from the magic of the story, that magic that captivates you and submerges you into a world unlike our own.

4 Quills

It’s a pretty solid story once you get past the minor set backs that I encountered. Personally, the cons are not enough to deter me from indulging in the next book.

About The Author

Kriston Johnson lives in Southwest Washington with her husband, teenage son, and miniature Australian Shepherd. Her home rests at the fringe of an old growth forest that she insists is the home of Jason Voorhees. Her husband thinks that’s a ridiculous assumption, because everyone knows it’s really Bigfoot. Every summer Kriston participates in the annual pilgrimage to Faerieworlds, a real life faerie realm here on Earth, and has an unhealthy obsession with Star Wars, The Vampire Diaries, and Iron Man. Awakened is her first novel.
