Book Description:
When life gives you a blank canvas, make art.
Sloane Whitaker hates everything about moving to Texas. She hates leaving behind her friends and half her family in New York, starting over senior year at Austin’s NextGen Academy, and having to say she lives in Texas. Most of all, she hates that it’s all her fault. If she wants to earn her way back to the Big Apple, she has to prove she can still be the perfect daughter.
Which means no vandalism art, no trouble at school, and absolutely no Tru Dorsey, her serial screw-up neighbor, who loves nothing more than pushing her buttons.
But from the moment he vaults onto the roof outside her bedroom, there is something about him that makes her want to break every rule. Suddenly it’ s not the ten things she hates about Tru that are at the top of her list. It’s the ten reasons she doesn’t want to be without him.
My Take:
Awww. This was
a super cute story with a feisty heroine and a swoon worthy love interest. It’s
a cute artsy coming of age love story and the laughs are abundant.
I loved - and
hated - that it had a series issue. I loved it, because it made the story that
more realistic but I hated it because there wasn’t really a resolution for this
problem. It sort of became a backseat problem and our heroine was NOT very
heroic, choosing instead to do nothing except make a silent vow that she would
do something in the future should the situation get worse.
Honey, the
situation is already a massive shit stain.
I don’t like
that something so serious was introduced and just left in the air and took away
from an otherwise great book that I didn’t want to put down.
It’s my
understanding that this is part of a series, so I can only hope that the
subject in question will get a resolution.
It’s worth
mentioning that this is not a very long read and I finished it in about 3ish
hours but it is pack full of info and not in that shove it down the reader’s
throats way. It’s kinda subtle, leaving you to feel as if you actually know
these characters and what make them tick. You are absolutely rooting for them
and are happy when good things come their way.
Another thing
I should mention…. I was feeling nostalgic and that is initially why I picked
this book for a review. I admit, I thought this was going to be some 10 things
I hate about you knock off. Please note, it most definitely is not. It’s a
catchy name but I kinda feel like this book is strong enough to stand on its
own and does not need the catchy name that makes one think of the charming
Julia Stiles/ Heath Ledger movie.
Also, I am
pretty sure there is more going on in her ‘home’ life that Sloane is unaware of
and I feel like that is another mystery left unsolved. Something that left me
wanting as a reader.
It’s a really
good book, if a little clichéd and predictable but I guess in this case, the
predictability made it more believable.

Quills
I sincerely
hope that I get a chance to read more about Tru and Sloane since there wasn’t
much of a resolution with them and an open-ended… well ending for lack of a
better word. This book had a lot of potential and even with my dislikes I feel
pretty sure that the next, if less ‘holes’ are presented will make this series
an unforgettable one.
