She’s in grave danger, but she doesn’t want his protection…
After a long and bitter world-war for pure human supremacy, humans and two sub-species the Eli and Crea reside on Earth in an uneasy harmony. One morning on a jog, Bliss Jacobs finds a murdered fellow Eli. She scents the killer on the body, but other evidence is washed away by a savage storm, leaving Bliss as the sole witness and the target of an assassin—and forcing her back into the world of the man who shattered her heart.
He believes she is his destined mate, but he knows there are no second chances…
Kaid Sinclair is chasing more than his best friend’s murderer. He wants Bliss in his bed and in his life, but after their relationship went south several years ago, he knows he has to tread carefully. So how can he keep her safe, while still proving to her that they are destined to be mates, and he doesn’t just want to control her? All he wants is for her to be safe—but with a killer who sees her as Kaid bait, Kaid may have to choose…his life or hers?
That was an extremely interesting story. I liked the premise when I read the synopsis but I wasn’t sure how I would feel about some of the details. I was really hesitant to read about human ‘subspecies’ because the lack of uniformity and real development tend to make those stories flop in my opinion. Luckily there was no such problem here. The Eli and Crea are exceptionally detailed and it seems that they were thought out and planned so I wasn’t left feeling confused in the least.
The story was enthralling and the characters, for lack of a better word, were charismatic. The concept of Twin Flames was sweet and a little different then your typical ‘fated’ mates story, but I found that difference very compelling. Another added bonus was, that although this is most definitely a love story, I don’t feel like I’m drowning in the romance. It’s there on basically every page but there is SO much more going on that it’s just another part of a well weaved story. The characters are very stubborn and often pig headed but they are also loyal and endearing and good. Their love story compels rather than distracts.
There are a good, healthy amount of steamy love scenes but then they are surrounded by a nice dose of action and a bit of mystery that definitely intrigues.
Kaid is such an interesting and devastatingly clueless character you can’t help but smile when you read in his perspective or he does something adorably sweet. And Bliss is an extremely strong minded woman, who is very believable. She has some moments of what I call typical heroine stupidity but they are few and far between so her character comes out extremely likable. And the dynamic between them is great. They have intense chemistry and a very interesting past that I would have liked to have gotten more insight on. It would have helped me, as a reader, to understand what exactly brought them to the point that they were currently at. Sure you get some glimpses but nothing to detailed and its kind of ghosted over, which is slightly disappointing in such and interesting book.
The problem that presents itself with the lack of information is that it seems like this series is more of a setting/clan series and not so much a series following 1 or 2 people along a journey; so unless a novella of sorts is revealed, we won’t learn much more about Kaid and Bliss and their shared past, with the exception of a honorable mention here and there or some interactions with the characters of the following books. Though it should be mentioned that I could be wrong since there are some factors that play into the story that lead me to believe that it is possible for us as readers to revisit Kaid and Bliss with this new threat.
There were only a few minor grammatical errors in the form of missing words. The was also the constant use of the phrase ‘the assassin’ even after his identity was revealed which irked me a bit especially since it was later revealed that he went by that name, leaving me to wonder, why was it not capitalized then a name would be?
I look forward to reading more of the Katoom series as I find all the characters to be intriguing. The romance is a definite plus ;) There are a lot of characters I can’t wait to hear more from.
